The STEMtastic Summer Challenge has started!

Most troops have slowed down for the summer, but that doesn’t mean the Girl Scout fun has stopped. Yesterday, July 1, kicked off the STEMtastic Summer Challenge, this year’s special summer patch!

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) isn’t just a school activity. In fact, summer is the perfect time to explore it and try new things! The STEMtastic Summer Challenge combines the fun of summertime with the excitement of science.

All you have to do is complete the minimum number of activities between July 1 and August 31, 2019. Once you’ve hit your minimum, you can come into any GSWNY shop to place your patch pre-order by September 30, 2019.

There are a total of 68 activities, and here are the numbers required per grade level:

  • Daisy: 20
  • Brownie: 25
  • Junior: 30
  • Cadette: 35
  • Senior: 40
  • Ambassador: 45

Girl Scouts are making smiles bright in March!

During the month of March, we’re focusing on dental health! Girl Scouts who participate will increase their knowledge of dental health and take action to provide dental hygiene supplies to other children in their communities.

Girls of all levels are invited to participate in the Dental Health Collection and Patch Program and earn this exclusive patch!

Requirements:

Learn about teeth. What are the parts of a tooth? In a book or online,
find a diagram of a tooth and learn about its parts. Find the crown, root, enamel, pulp, and cementum. What is the importance of each part?

Find out why it is important to brush and floss every day. Make a personal brushing and flossing chart to record when you brush and floss for two weeks.

Discover how our diet helps or hurts our teeth. A healthy diet means healthier teeth but some foods like sugar can harm them. Learn about a balanced diet. Make a collage or draw a picture that shows which foods are either good or bad for our teeth.

Find out about careers related to dental health. For Daisies and Brownies and Juniors – Draw a picture of what you think a dental health professional looks like. For Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors – Find out about college programs, that are offered at nearby schools, in the field of dental health.

Help others keep their teeth healthy too! Collect dental hygiene items such as toothbrushes, dental floss, and toothpaste to donate to community dental clinics in Western New York. Bring your donations to your nearest GSWNY Service Center during the month of March.

Our GSWNY Dental Hygiene Collection will benefit local children through Western New York Community Dental Providers.

The patch will be available for sale in our GSWNY Council Shops. Count the number of items you collect so we can see how many smiles we’ll make brighter!

Girl Scouts Fight Hunger

2018-girl-scouts-fight-hunger-flyers2.jpg

April is an exciting month for Girl Scouts. This year, we’re kicking off camp, announcing new and exciting partnerships and celebrating our volunteers. But it doesn’t end there.

For the Girl Scouts of Western New York, April is also about giving back, specifically through our annual Girl Scouts Fight Hunger initiative.

Throughout the month of April, we encourage everyone in our council to donate food. These donations support the Food Bank of Western New York and Foodlink. All of our service centers are available to accept your donations, making it easy to contribute.

You can find us Batavia, Buffalo, Jamestown and Lockport. Our hours vary, so please confirm we’ll be there through our website before you stop by. If you want to donate but cannot make it to a service center, email us at girl.experience@gswny.org.

Like most drives, only non-expired and non-perishable food items will be accepted. Suggestions include peanut butter, canned fruits and veggies, mac and cheese, tuna, cereal, granola bars and more.

You can even fight hunger in your community while earning our Girl Scouts Fight Hunger Patch. You can join our council-wide effort to combat hunger through knowledge and awareness. There are two steps toward completing the patch: discover and connect and take action.

First, either on your own or with your troop or family you must find a way to discover and connect to the issue. After learning more, you will connect donations and drop them off at one of our locations. For more information about ways to connect and preregister for the patch, check out this flyer.

Thank you in advance to everyone who helps us fight hunger in Western New York!
