#GivingTuesday 2019 is tomorrow!

Hopefully, your return to work today isn’t too hard after a Thanksgiving holiday spent with friends and family. The big shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us, but you can still make a difference this holiday season by supporting Girl Scouts on #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday is the social revolution of generosity and it’s happening tomorrow! Your support helps us continue to make a difference in the lives of our girls. Consider giving today and join the global movement to celebrate giving back.

We’re so thankful for our supporters, volunteers, advocates, and donors who embrace our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Without you, we couldn’t reach the thousands of girls across Western New York and deliver programming designed to set them up for success.

This year, we rolled out more than 200 programs focusing on our pillars of outdoors, STEM, life skills, and entrepreneurship, and everything in between. We want every girl to have the chance to pursue her dreams – whatever it looks for her.

Some of the programs we’ve held so far include a Pathways to Health Professional workshop where girls explored science and more; a Trailblazers program for our youngest Girl Scouts where they learned about fire building, tent pitching, leave no trace, and orienteering; a Maker Mania event at JCC that had the girls designing 3D patches, seeing a 3D printer in action, exploring the art of fingerprinting, and becoming beginner welders; a Glass Fusing class at Rochester Arc + Flame; and our 50th Anniversary Skills and Chills where girls competed in skills like canoeing, kayaking, fire building, tent pitching, log sawing, first aid, orienteering, archery, and more!

Plus, for the first time ever, our Girl Advisory Board held a conference for our Girl Scouts around council. The 2019 GIRL Experience Convention welcomed more than 300 attendees at Daemen College last month. The morning featured empowering keynote speakers and a Q&A. Following lunch, all levels were invited to an expo featuring many of our amazing program partners. From aerial arts to martial arts, face painting to robotics, and everything in between, this girl-led and girl-driven event represented what it means to be a Girl Scout.

All of this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what our Girl Scouts are doing and how donations support their growth. Join us on Facebook tomorrow to hear stories from counties around our council of what Girl Scouts are doing to make a difference, just like you.

Thank you for all that you do.

Hippie Pandas win Champions Award and 1st place Robot Performance!

[The following post was submitted to us by Cheryl Lawniczak for the Hippie Pandas. If you’d like to submit your story, email communications@gswny.org]

The GSWNY FIRST Lego Robotics team Hippie Pandas has won Champions Award and our robot scored the highest points at their first competition. They have earned a spot in the Finger Lakes Regional Championship  tournament which is December 8th.

This year.s theme is City Shapers and they had to come up with an innovative solution to help our community with a building or public space. The problem they chose was there was no outdoor activity that would be accessible to all ages and abilities to promote community cooperation and interaction. Their project was to build an Interactive Musical Park featuring The Hippie  Panda Musical Tower of Play and Freenotes Harmony Park outdoor percussion instruments.

During the research the talked with many experts: Town Supervisor, Director of Parks and Recreation, Construction Manager who recently installed the ADA playground at a local school, an Industrial Hygienist to determine sound levels and the Richard Cooke the Grammy Award winning inventor of Freenotes Harmony Park instruments!

The girls’ robot has innovative design that allows quick change out of attachments. They call the concept the Universal Gravity Attachments. Their robot activates LEGO mission models such as aligning a crane and lowering the load onto a building, removing a traffic jam, releasing a wheelchair swing, lowering an elevator, staging modular buildings across the field and raising flags on a bridge.

It’s been an exciting year and they are busy preparing for the Regional!

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) isn’t just a school activity. In fact, summer is the perfect time to explore it and try new things! The STEMtastic Summer Challenge combines the fun of summertime with the excitement of science.

All you have to do is complete the minimum number of activities between July 1 and August 31, 2019. Once you’ve hit your minimum, you can come into any GSWNY shop to place your patch pre-order by September 30, 2019.

There are a total of 68 activities, and here are the numbers required per grade level:

Extended year memberships are still available!

It’s almost time for school to be over and for summer to officially start and we cannot wait! Not only do our summer camps open in the beginning of July, we have other fun activities for our Girl Scouts to do.

If you aren’t a Girl Scout yet, we have an amazing promotion. Right now you can join Girl Scouts for just $35 and it covers the rest of this membership year AS WELL AS the next! Registering now means you’re getting more fun for less money!

Even though many troops meet less frequently throughout the summer, it doesn’t mean a Girl Scout can’t have her own fun. We have Community Events where girls can go to baseball games, water parks, and other events for reduced costs. There’s the STEMtastic Summer Challenge that encourages girls to keep learning in fun and interesting ways. Of course, we still have space in our camps for girls.

This deal is even sweeter for pre-k girls who can’t wait to be Daisies! Even if they aren’t five or in kindergarten yet, they qualify for extended year and can start their Girl Scout experience now.

One great way to begin her journey as a Daisy is to attend our Daisy for a Day event June 29. We’re having six parties around council the last weekend in June to get our future Daisies excited about being Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouting is a year-round experience and you can get started today with Extended Year Membership!
