Dear GSWNY Members,

Western New York has now reached Phase Four for reopening, and we are pleased to be able to resume some limited in-person Girl Scouting activities and events starting this week.

Please see the new COVID-19 Update 7-7-2020 and corresponding guidelines for troops and service units to follow when planning in-person activities and meetings.

Before leading any in-person Girl Scout activities, volunteers must review the Safety Activity guidelines for in-person meetings, and attend the webinar this week or watch the recording.

Webinar recordings will be shared for those unable to attend.

In next week’s Member Essentials we will also share our plans to soon open our camp properties for family and troop day-trips, and service centers for curbside retail.

Also, starting today, Tuesday, July 7, our office/phone hours are back to summer hours: Monday-Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Phone lines are closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.) Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday: Closed

Register for our alternative summer camp today!

This week kicks off our first session of ‘The Summer We Camped at Home,’ our camp experience, reimagined. With a combination of self-directed at-home activities and virtual experiences, we’re bringing the fun of summer camp right to your door.

Both girls in Girl Scouting and non-members are invited to register. The weekly cost is $60, which includes a Camp Activity Kit delivered right to your door, live virtual sessions, online dining hall experiences, self-led activities, virtual campfires, and more! Non-members will also need to enroll in Girl Scouts upon registration for $25. Financial aid is available.

Feed the Need: GSWNY’s Summer Food Drive 2020

According to nokidhungry.org1 in 4 kids could face hunger this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. By helping to keep our community food banks, pantries, and cupboards stocked, the Girl Scouts of Western New York can help make a difference in our communities.

Our next round of Virtual Meet-Ups begin July 14!

Our Meet-ups are four-week long interactive programs offering all girls a taste of the Girl Scout experience. Girls will meet new friends, tap into their creativity, and discover how to take the lead in her own life and the world. Both current and non-Girl Scouts are invited.

Global Gender Equality Series
Tuesday, July 7 | 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Activities, inspired by our Girl Scout STEM Have you ever found yourself wondering how you can make the world a better place? Do you want to raise awareness and learn how to advocate for gender equality? This series is a wonderful place to start. Fourteen Girl Scouts from across the country devised a six-part virtual series covering the most pressing issues facing girls today.

Topics include Girls’ Access to Education, Girls in Leadership, Girls in STEM, and Gender-Based Violence. You’ll learn about what’s happening around the world and how we can make a difference here in the United States. Girls will also earn the 2020 Global Action Award that will be mailed to participants at the end of the program.

This series has a $25 registration fee and will be held weekly on Tuesday evenings from 4:00–6:00 p.m. EDT 6/30/2020 through 8/4/2020. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email with details about the activities and what you’ll earn

Disney on Broadway Mega-Miz-Theater-Party!
Thursday, July 9 | 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Join us on Thursday, July 9, from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. ET, for an exclusive Instagram Live workshop presented by Girl Scouts and Disney on Broadway. This workshop is open to all ages, and all skill levels, so come be a part of the fun! Here’s what you can expect:

  • Get an inside look at skills it takes to tell a story onstage. Disney Teaching Artist Lauren Chapman will explore three Disney on Broadway productions: The Lion King, Frozen, and Aladdin
  • Warm up your body and move like a lioness to the music of The Lion King
  • Tap into your inner Elsa as you explore your acting ability through the story of Frozen
  • Learn actual Broadway music and choreography from Aladdin

To participate, you must have an active Instagram account and follow @girlscouts to attend this event. An account is free, and we recommend you  sign in and follow us in advance if you have not done so already!

Live! Awesome Girls: Space Exploration – Mars to the Stars 

Prepare for the launch of the Perseverance rover this summer! Join experts for an overview of the Mars mission and the stars beyond.

  • Hear from experts about Mars and the goals of the mission
  • Learn how you can watch the rover launch and get hands-on with Mars activities at home!
  • Get tips on viewing the amazing night sky, including planets and stars

Gear up to participate in the Great Space Challenge and be eligible for a patch!
