Member Essentials – 4/13/21

Dear GSWNY Members,

We want to provide you with an exciting update regarding our 2021 summer camp programs.  Our camp team has been working hard to assure that our camp programs will be able to operate in person and that hard work has paid off.  We are very happy to announce that we are planning to operate our summer day camp programs , Camp Piperwood and Camp Windy Meadows in person for summer 2021. We also understand how important it is for our Girl Scouts to have the full outdoor camp experience and that includes overnight camping.  We are pleased to announce that starting summer 2021, troop camp overnights will be rolled out in a phased approach.

The health and safety of our campers, camp staff, volunteers and families is our highest priority and we are confident in our ability to follow all currently stated public health safety guidelines for summer day camp operation. As we learned this past year, health officials may make changes to safety guidelines and we will keep you updated if we need to make any changes to our summer camp plans.

Please know that we have every intention of operating our resident camp programs, Camp Seven Hills and Camp Timbercrest in person as well. However, we are still waiting on specific safety and operational guidelines from the New York State Health Department. We are hoping that we will be in receipt of them soon and will be able to provide you with updated information at that time. A decision on whether we will be offering alternative camp this summer has not been determined at this time.

Please see the two letters about day camp and troop camp here. If you have additional questions regarding day camp, or Phase I troop camping for summer 2021  or need assistance with pre-registering your troop, please reach out to customer care at customercare@gswny.org or 1-888 837-6410.

Thank you for all you do!

The Five Languages of Appreciation

During April, we’re celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Month! The impact that a simple thank you has on people from our wonderful troop co-leaders, to our dedicated Service Unit team members, and to all other incredible volunteers, is incredible to see. It’s very easy to tell someone thank you, but did you know that most people prefer to be thanked in specific ways? Some people love applause and public accolades while others really do not like to have the spotlight put on them. So how do you go about thanking someone?

Tenure and Years of Service: GSWNY Adult Recognition Award Monthly Highlight – April 2021

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month! This April we are going to circle back to Years of Service and Tenure pins. These are an easy and meaningful way to show volunteer appreciation. The greatest gift a person can give you is their time. The least we can do is formally thank one another and recognize each volunteer’s hard work and dedication. The Years of Service and Tenure Pins do just that – thank people for the years they have given to the Girl Scouts.

We’re excited to announce that Spring Renewal for Girl Scout membership year 2022 will open on April 1! We are finalizing our renewal incentives – including GSWNY lunch bags, patches, and drawings for cookie-inspired K-Swiss sneakers. Plus, don’t forget our signature renewal perk, SAGE Tuition Rewards – renew by 5/31 to qualify. Renewal flyer will be ready soon!

In the meanwhile, troop leaders should discuss with their girls about using cookie profits toward renewal – a great way to reward families and get ready for the fall!

SAGE TUITION REWARDS INFO

Cookie Program extended till Sunday, April 4

GOOD NEWS! Many troops asked us to extend the cookie program for a week, as they know people will be looking to purchase cookies due to the upcoming holiday weekend.

So GUESS WHAT? Ask and you shall receive!
Troops can extend cookie booths and sales until April 4, if they wish to do so. This is optional and a request from girls, parents, and troops who are actively trying to reach their personal or troop goals.  It is not an expectation for any troops.

Payment and recognition due dates will stay the same. To help girls reach their goals, troops will need to order cookies and assign them to girls by March 28th. Recognitions are due in Smart Cookies by March 30th and payments are due to council by March 31.

Troops who pick up cookies after March 30 will still receive troop proceeds and a troop refund form can be requested for those funds between April 8-April 15.  Cupboards will be open March 30-April 1st – hours of operation vary by cupboard. Troops are requested to put in a planned order as soon as they can. Planned orders will be pulled by the order date and time they are received in Smart Cookies. Cookie varieties are limited so order ahead of time.

Walmart booth locations cannot be extended – we’ve utilized all the dates in our contract and Easter Weekend is one that’s not permitted for sales use by their corporate office.

GSUSA has extended the Troop Link for direct ship till April 30. More information on how to participate will be in the next Cookie Newsletter.

Member Essentials – 3/16/21

Dear GSWNY Members,

This past weekend marked the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic shut-down in Western New York.

There has been so much loss this year – loss of loved ones, missing loved ones, lost jobs, closed schools, racial injustice, financial distress, and many other hardships.

I am so proud of how you–our girls, volunteers, families, staff and community–responded in light of these many difficulties

From March 2020-March 2021, our girls, supported by caring adult mentors, dedicated themselves to service and leadership–from staying home and wearing masks, to making masks and spreading joy to others, to donating cookies to community heroes, and learning about the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Mental Health professionals recommend coping tips around the pandemic anniversary including: practicing self-care; being kind to yourself and others; blessing or honoring the memory of those you have lost; and reflecting or journaling on what you can be grateful for.

I am grateful to be a part of our amazing organization as our beautiful mission has given me purpose and our strong Girl Scout community has allowed me the chance to feel connected.

I invite you to pause and reflect on what or who you are grateful for.

And we leave you with this wonderful video from our initial Trefoil TV series in spring 2020–our own staff member, Alaina Jones (formerly Cottrell), and her Motivational Moment–take a minute to watch this as Alaina will brighten your day!

Thank you for all that you do–I am grateful for you.

Alison

Please see the important announcements below and for questions, please contact Customer Care customercare@gswny.org or call 1-888-837-6410. In an emergency, please call 1-800-882-9268.

Thank you for all you do!

WE WANT YOUR PHOTOS!

We want your cookie season photos, but please read the media guidelines to ensure we can accept and use your submissions.

Due to the fact that it is often impossible to tell who is in the same household visually, we are only accepting photos that show ALL girls and adults properly wearing masks and social distancing from each other (even if they are related and from the same household). We understand this limits the number and types of photos that can be submitted and will be accepted for posting, but due to the number of questions we have received about what is being depicted in photos we can currently only use photos clearly following the above rules. We apologize for any confusion and for the limitations this imposes, but we want to make sure we are clear about the safety of our members. We reserve the right not to post any photos for any reason. Photos can be sent to communications@gswny.org.

Please follow our current COVID guidelines regarding all in-person activities (found at gswnyblog.com). Some areas of council are under different restrictions than others. All submissions MUST show girls and families following all safety guidelines regarding COVID.

Member Essentials – 2/23/21

Dear GSWNY Members,

At Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY), we build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

GSWNY acknowledges and condemns the recent surge in violence against the Asian community across the country. We uplift and amplify the Asian American Federation’s statement with Asian, Black, and Hispanic Association nonprofits condemning attacks and calling for solutions. We want to reiterate to all girls, volunteers, alums, supporters, families, and staff that we do not tolerate racial injustice, and we strive to create a welcoming space where all of our members feel they belong.

Girl Scout members stand up and for the principles of the Girl Scout mission and law. You can find resources from the Asian American Federation here.

Please see the important announcements below and for questions, please contact Customer Care customercare@gswny.org or call 1-888-837-6410. In an emergency, please call 1-800-882-9268.

Thank you for all you do!

On behalf of the GSWNY Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee, we are celebrating Black History Month by highlighting Black women who were pioneers in fields that reflect our four program pillars: Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, STEM, and Outdoors. Each week we’ll share a blog post with her story, as well as other information and activities to help you celebrate the month, too!

We selected Bessie Coleman for Outdoors because of her adventurous achievements in the world of aviation. While we would love to include all of her feats, travels, and training, as well as more of her personal story, Coleman’s biography is so full and rich that this summary hits mostly only the highlights.

We selected Susan McKinney Steward, M.D., for STEM because she is hailed as the third Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States and the first African American female physician in New York state. While those are great accomplishments for any person, they are even more powerful when you consider what she had to overcome due to racism and sexism at the time. Steward’s story is impossible to summarize in a few short paragraphs.
