Member Essentials

Member Essentials – 3/16/21

Dear GSWNY Members,

This past weekend marked the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic shut-down in Western New York.

There has been so much loss this year – loss of loved ones, missing loved ones, lost jobs, closed schools, racial injustice, financial distress, and many other hardships.

I am so proud of how you–our girls, volunteers, families, staff and community–responded in light of these many difficulties

From March 2020-March 2021, our girls, supported by caring adult mentors, dedicated themselves to service and leadership–from staying home and wearing masks, to making masks and spreading joy to others, to donating cookies to community heroes, and learning about the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Mental Health professionals recommend coping tips around the pandemic anniversary including: practicing self-care; being kind to yourself and others; blessing or honoring the memory of those you have lost; and reflecting or journaling on what you can be grateful for.

I am grateful to be a part of our amazing organization as our beautiful mission has given me purpose and our strong Girl Scout community has allowed me the chance to feel connected.

I invite you to pause and reflect on what or who you are grateful for.

And we leave you with this wonderful video from our initial Trefoil TV series in spring 2020–our own staff member, Alaina Jones (formerly Cottrell), and her Motivational Moment–take a minute to watch this as Alaina will brighten your day!

Thank you for all that you do–I am grateful for you.

Alison

Special Announcement

Girl Scouts of the USA is excited to announce the Becoming Me program, a special collaboration with Penguin Random House and Former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama. The program follows the recent publication of Mrs. Obama’s book, Becoming: Adapted for Young Readers, and offers a unique opportunity for Girl Scouts to embark on their journeys to become their best selves. The program, which includes a virtual event with Mrs. Obama, will also walk girls through earning three badges at each Girl Scout level.

Girl Scouts’ Becoming Me program will be available to any interested Girl Scout enrolled for the 2021–22 membership year. Drawing on Girl Scouts’ programming—which includes over 300 skill-building badges—we’re thrilled to release the curated Becoming Me program series, built on 18 badges that explore key themes in Becoming: Adapted for Young Readers. The Becoming Me program will launch in early May 2021. Learn more by visiting girlscouts.org/BecomingMe.

It’s Girl ScoutThe 2020 Annual Report is out now!

Last year was a time like no other, so we created a unique Annual Report to represent the experience of our council and Girl Scouts.

Divided into two parts and designed to be flipped, each section represents a different part of the year. October 2019 to March 2020 represents the year before COVID and then March 2020 to September 2020 features more about the adjustments we made as the pandemic disrupted our normal. Read it online today!
